Essential Updates to United Kingdom Travel Requirements

Last updated on 13 Jan, 2026

Travel requirements for the United Kingdom are currently undergoing significant changes. The UK government is transitioning from physical immigration documents to a digital-first system involving eVisas and the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which serves as digital permission to travel.

United Kingdom Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

If you are a traveler who does not require a visa for short stays in the UK (up to six months), you will now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

It is critical to check when you need an ETA and apply in advance via the official portal: www.gov.uk/electronic-travel-authorisation. Please be aware that from 25 February 2026, eligible visitors without a valid ETA will not be permitted to board their transport and cannot legally travel to the UK.

Transitioning to eVisas

For those who already hold a UK visa but rely on physical immigration documents to prove their rights, or for those with an expired biometric residence permit (BRP) or card (BCP); action is required immediately. You should take steps to access your eVisa by creating a UK Visas and Immigration account at www.gov.uk/evisa.

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

If you have been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and currently prove your status using a vignette or a stamp in your passport, you are eligible to make a free No Time Limit application. This process will allow you to access an eVisa and digitize your status.

If you already possess an eVisa, you must ensure that the UK Government has the correct details for the passport you intend to use for travel. If your current passport is not already linked to your eVisa UK Visas and Immigration account, you should update your details at www.gov.uk/update-uk-visas-immigration-account-details.
