Saudi Arabia Introduces Medications Carriage Policy - Important Advisory Before you Travel

Last updated on 23 Oct, 2025

Saudi Arabia's new regulation, effective November 1, 2025, requires travelers carrying specific prescription medications to register them in advance. The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) now mandates electronic clearance for drugs such as Xanax, Adderall, Valium, and Tramadol. This measure ensures safe travel while maintaining strict control over narcotic and psychotropic substances entering or leaving the Kingdom.

New Prescription Disclosure Requirement

The SFDA has announced that travelers must declare and register controlled medications before arrival or departure. This includes commonly prescribed drugs for pain, anxiety, and ADHD. The advance registration aims to simplify the verification process at airports while ensuring that patients continue receiving necessary treatments during travel.

Medications That Require Advance Clearance

Some of the most frequently used medications under this rule include (but not limited to):

  • Alprazolam (Xanax)
  • Adderall
  • Hydrocodone
  • Zolpidem (Ambien)
  • Diazepam (Valium)
  • Pregabalin (Lyrica)

Any medication containing codeine, methylphenidate, or tramadol also falls within the new disclosure requirements. A complete list can be found on the SFDA website under the "Tables" section.

How to Apply for SFDA Clearance

Travelers must apply for clearance through the Controlled Drug System (CDS) portal at https://cds.sfda.gov.sa. The process involves creating an account, submitting details about the medication and trip, and uploading supporting documents such as a doctor’s prescription, medical report, and proof of identity. The CDS platform also allows users to track their application status in real time.

Ensuring Safe and Smooth Arrival Experience in Saudi Arabia

This new guideline strengthens Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to prevent misuse of controlled substances while protecting legitimate patient needs. By obtaining advance clearance, travelers can avoid potential delays or legal issues at entry and exit points.

SFDA’s Commitment to Traveler Safety

The SFDA emphasizes that the new system supports both public safety and patient welfare. It enables travelers to carry necessary medications legally while maintaining strict oversight of controlled drugs. With the CDS platform available 24/7, users can complete the process anytime, ensuring a smooth and secure travel experience.
