Italy Suspends Schengen Border Agreement With Spain After Ceuta Migration Surge

Italy has temporarily reintroduced border checks on travellers arriving from Spain after a major migrant crisis unfolded in Ceuta, a Spanish territory on the North African coast. The Italian government said the move was a temporary security measure targeting non-EU nationals travelling by air and sea from Spain, following concerns about uncontrolled migration flows into European territory. The decision has created political tensions within the European Union, as Spain defended its management of the crisis and stressed that Schengen rules remain intact.

Thousands Cross From Morocco Into Ceuta

The crisis centred on Ceuta, where tens of thousands of migrants attempted to enter Spanish territory from Morocco. Reports said around 60,000 people crossed or attempted to cross the border area within a short period, with many reaching the enclave by swimming around coastal barriers or attempting to breach border areas. At least 57 people died during the dangerous crossings. Spanish authorities blamed misinformation and human-smuggling networks for encouraging migrants to make the journey. Most of those who entered later returned voluntarily to Morocco after Spanish and Moroccan authorities increased security measures.

Ceuta: A European City in North Africa

Ceuta is a small Spanish autonomous city located on the northern coast of Africa, surrounded by Morocco except for its coastline facing the Strait of Gibraltar. Covering only about 20 square kilometres, it has a population of around 85,000 people and is one of two Spanish territories in mainland Africa, alongside Melilla. Its border with Morocco is also one of the European Union’s only land borders with Africa, making it a highly sensitive migration route.

What it Means for Travelers from Pakistan

A traveler holding a Schengen visa issued by any member country can freely cross borders within the Schengen territory. Any passenger holding a Spanish visa and traveling from Pakistan can land in Spain and then travel across any Schengen member country through air, sea or land.

Due to this temporary suspension by Italy, the passengers holding Spanish visas need to make necessary arrangements before entering Italy. This includes proper immigration checks at Italian borders.
