  • Tourists traveling onwards to northern areas

The increased frequency suggests Fly Jinnah sees strong demand on this route, especially from travelers who value time over long road journeys.

Why This Route Matters

The Lahore-Islamabad corridor is one of Pakistan’s busiest travel routes. Thousands of people travel between the two cities every day for business, legal matters, government work, tourism, family visits, and tourism.

Despite this high demand, direct air connectivity between the two cities has remained extremely limited in recent years. Aviation Minister Khawaja Asif stated that this route had effectively remained suspended for nearly five years, and Fly Jinnah’s launch brings back much-needed competition and convenience.

Before this announcement, travelers mostly relied on:

  • Motorway travel
  • Daewoo and luxury bus services
  • Private cars
  • Rail travel

PIA's Last Operation of Lahore-Islamabad Flights

Pakistan International Airlines was among the last major airline to operate direct flights between Lahore and Islamabad before regular services became highly limited. The flight service between Lahore and Islamabad was discontinued in early 2020s.

Due to short flight and ample by road options that ultimately take similar time if your travel by road or air, no other domestic carrier came into competition.

Over the past several years, the route became commercially challenging because many passengers shifted to motorway travel after the completion and improvement of the M-2 Motorway. With a reliable road network available, airlines found it difficult to maintain frequent direct flights profitably.

What This Means for Pakistan’s Domestic Aviation Market

Fly Jinnah’s entry on the Lahore-Islamabad route shows confidence in Pakistan’s domestic aviation sector, specially on short routes.

If passenger demand remains strong, other airlines such as Airblue, AirSial, or even Pakistan International Airlines may consider returning to this route in the future.

For now, Fly Jinnah enjoys a first-mover advantage as the only airline operating direct flights between these two major cities, and the cheap introductory fare could drive strong early bookings.
