- European Union’s New Entry/Exit System Goes Live on 12 October 2025
Last updated on 24 Oct, 2025
On 12 October 2025, the European Union rolled out its long-awaited Entry/Exit System (EES) across the Schengen Area. This new digital system replaces the traditional passport stamping process for non-EU visitors. The goal is to modernize border management, strengthen security, and make it easier to track travel patterns within the region. By moving to an automated system, the EU aims to enhance both efficiency and traveler experience.

The new Entry/Exit System applies to all non-EU nationals who enter the Schengen Area for short stays, typically up to 90 days within a 180-day period. When arriving at a border, travellers will now need to have their fingerprints and a facial image taken. This biometric data will be stored securely and used to verify identity during future entries and exits. The change affects both visa-exempt and visa-required visitors alike.

While the system officially took effect on 12 October 2025, implementation is happening gradually across member states. Some border points may still use manual passport stamps during the early transition phase. Travellers might experience slightly longer wait times as border officials adapt to the new procedures. However, authorities expect the process to become smoother and faster once the technology is fully integrated.
The EES marks a major step forward in Europe’s border modernization strategy. For travellers, it means more accurate records, fewer manual checks, and eventually shorter queues. For EU authorities, it provides a reliable way to detect overstays and improve overall security. Although there may be minor challenges during the initial rollout, the system is expected to make travel in and out of Europe more transparent, efficient, and secure in the long run.
